What every bride should know about wireless microphones?

So why is it important that you learn a little about wireless microphones? You're a bride and that's the DJ's job. If you ask your DJ to provide a wireless microphone, read on. I'll make a complicated topic very simple for you.

Wireless microphones come in a variety of brands, styles and technologies. For as little as $50-$75 anyone can pick up a wireless mic at Radio Shack or online, while other retailers charge $500 or more. So what's the difference between a cheap mic and an expensive mic? The complicated answer is brand name, element quality, durability, frequency and technology(UHF, VHF, FM, etc.) but let's break it down to what matters for the average person who simply wants to hear clear announcements at their reception without static or dropouts. Here's the simple answer. I can sum it up in two words... dual diverisity.

Everything else aside the best wireless microphones are dual diversity. What does this mean? A dual diversity mic uses the best of two wireless channels. If a channel is lost, it simply switches to the other channel instantly to avoid a dropout. Most dual diversity wireless microphones cost $300 and up. Any DJ who takes his job seriously uses a dual diversity wireless microphone. So when you are talking with your DJ, you don't need to ask what brand he uses or if he uses UHF or VHF. Just ask if he uses a dual diversity mic. If he says he does not use dual diversity or he doesn't understand the question keep searching.

*Additional note: Current legislation may change laws governing access to wireless channels in 2009. Your DJ should be aware of these changes and explain how he intends to avoid problems at your wedding reception. The last thing you want are TV, radio or other signals broadcasted over a microphone in the middle of your reception. No wireless technology is perfect but your DJ should take every step he can to reduce the chance of problems occuring at your reception.

FREE Custom Wedding Song for your Reception!

So you want your wedding reception to be different, nothing cliche, nothing overdone, elegant but distinct. You want something exciting and new. I just started humming the Love Boat theme. But really, you want to create unique nostalgic moments with traditional events but you also want to be original. You've been to too many weddings and had deja vu. It was as though the only change was choice of color, table linens and maybe a few songs. You are determined to make your guests say, "Wow, that's great. I've never seen anyone do this at a wedding. I have to do that at my wedding."

Imagine you've just cut your wedding cake. As your DJ invites you to the dance floor for your first dance, you hear a beautiful song with your personal message to each other, your parents, friends or family. Sounds expensive right? Not in the Cincinnati area. Kellinghaus Entertainment and DJ at 513dj.com offers this service for free to all customers. That's right, FREE! And they make it so easy. Customers simply call a toll free number to record messages. It's similar to leaving an outgoing message on a cell phone. Once you've recorded your message, you can listen to it and rerecord it before accepting. Your recording is then digitally processed and edited, even removing "ands" and "uhms". Once it's processed, it's edited with music to create a unique song. The most popular songs are bride to father, bride to groom and groom to bride. It can also be used for a special out of town guest who can't attend or any special person in your life. It's a unique keepsake when your wedding is over. For more information visit 513dj.com. Cincinnati DJs at Mobile Beat DJ Convention Chicago

Hundreds of DJs from all over the world gathered in Chicago on July 14th, 15th and 16th, 2008, to share and learn at the Mobile Beat DJ Convention. Ryan Kellinghaus and Tom Anstead are DJs with Kellinghaus Entertainment & DJ, a service based in the greater Cincinnati area. They made the trip to learn, meet other DJs and check out new technology.

Nationally known speakers from within and outside the DJ Industry (like Jay “Guerilla Marketing” Levinson) were on hand to give attendees the best possible DJ educational experience. It was Ryan's third national convention. He attended shows in Las Vegas and Orlando but said, "This was a real learning experience. Tom and I knew exactly what we wanted. We had a list of specific gear we wanted to check out and we wanted to network with DJs from around the world. We didn't want to miss an educational opportunity like this. There's no better way to improve as a DJ." They discussed the hottest topics in the biz, tried out the latest high tech gear, partied with DJs from all over the world and ate lots of pizza (hey it's Chicago right?).

Tom purchased an X Laser and commented, "We want cutting edge technology. Our customers notice. The problem is that it's not easy finding the best gear without getting hands-on and seeing it for yourself. I've always wanted a good laser but I didn't want a little 5 milliwatt flash and trash effect. I wanted something powerful. I wanted a jaw dropping effect and I found it. It diffuses hundreds of lasers that dance to music and light up an entire room. It's the kind of thing that you have to see to appreciate, especially when you are spending $700 on a light that is only the size of a loaf of bread." The highlight of their trip was dinner with Glenn Schroeder, a Chicago based DJ and Bose rep. Ryan added, "Glenn was great and he introduced us to some other DJs. I learned a lot from him. He set up a special demo so we could check out the latest Bose speaker systems. I bought two systems and now offer this technology for my customers. I never would have had the opportunity if we hadn't made the trip to Chicago."

Monogram Lighting Greater Cincinnati Weddings

Ever attend a wedding where the bride and groom had their initals projected in light on the dance floor or a wall and you loved it? Monogram lighting is an elegant touch and a dramatic cost effective visual statement. However, getting your monogram projected through a lighting fixture is no simple task. Cut corners and you won't be happy so here's the 411 on monogram lighting...

Goboman.com offers a do it yourself package for $229. It's the cheapest option I could find on the internet. This does not include a stand for the light and it only includes a 100 watt light. This is not a bright fixture and requires a dark environment. The throw or distance between the light and projected surface will also be very limited (that means it may be ok if projected very close to the wall or floor). A good, crisp and bright monogram can only be produced using a very bright elipsoidal fixture such as a 575 watt ETC Source Four Jr. Your monogram must be designed using a graphic art program such as Photoshop. Then a disc called a gobo must be created for a perfect image with clean crisp lines. Gobos are discs inserted in lighting fixtures to project an image. A professional DJ or local lighting rental company can help you but you'll want to consider their reputation as well as rates.

We have a reputation for high quality production lighting... artwork, proof, production and set up on your big day. It's one of our most popular options. For more information on this service visit 513dj.com. You can also shoot me an email with questions at Ryan@513dj.com.
